The Specialized Certificate serves as an advanced continuation of the Automotive Technology program and is intended for students who have completed the Automotive Technology Associate of Applied Science (AAS), the Advanced Technical Certificate (ATC), or for experienced technicians who have achieved ASE certification and have relevant industry experience.

Instruction combines applied theory with hands-on laboratory work and live shop experience. Each course is structured to build both technical knowledge and real-world problem-solving ability. Students learn to operate industry-standard tools, diagnostic equipment, and software while developing the discipline and precision required in today’s automotive field in modern lab facilities.

The program is aligned with Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) standards and emphasizes competency across all major vehicle systems, including engine repair, drivetrain systems, steering and suspension, braking systems, heating and air conditioning, electrical and electronic systems, and engine performance diagnostics. Students are expected to think critically, work efficiently, and approach diagnostics with a methodical and professional mindset. The program maintains a high standard of performance and accountability, requiring students to demonstrate competency through nationally recognized assessments.

Students are required to hold a valid driver’s license and remain insurable under the college’s automotive liability policy for the duration of the program.

A specified set of tools is required upon entry. The tool list can be found on the program website.

Admission requirements:

1. Complete general LC State admission requirements
2. Submit college placement exam scores
3. Schedule shop consultation with program faculty

Entrance requirements for the Automotive Technology program include:

• A valid driver’s license with no DUI conviction within the past year.
• ALEKS score of 14 or higher in Math and Writing Placement Exam of 2 or equivalent college placement exams.
• Physical well-being, good manual dexterity, and the strength to lift heavy objects are necessary.

The automotive program has limited space, and a waitlist is utilized if the program is full. Duration on the waitlist is one semester. If students do not move into program classes after one semester on the waitlist, they need to reschedule their shop consultation.

Upon completion of the Automotive Specialized Certificate program, the student will have skills to:

• Diagnose and repair complex automotive systems using advanced diagnostic strategies
• Analyze system interactions across mechanical, electrical, and electronic components
• Operate advanced diagnostic equipment and interpret data to support accurate repairs
• Apply critical thinking and structured diagnostic processes to real-world scenarios
• Perform work at a professional level consistent with advanced industry expectations

Upon completion of the program, students must pass all parts of the ASE certification tests in order to graduate.
